Overview

Why This Checklist Is Specific to the LA to San Jose Move

Moving from LA to San Jose is not just a change of address - it's a shift between two distinct utility markets, two different DMV service zones, and neighborhoods with their own parking permit rules. Generic moving checklists skip all of that.

This guide covers the specific steps that apply to the LA to San Jose corridor: which SoCal utility providers you're canceling, which NorCal providers you're setting up, how to update your California vehicle registration with Santa Clara County, and how neighborhood parking permits work in Willow Glen, Almaden, and other San Jose areas.

It also covers what to sort and donate before the truck is loaded. Every cubic foot you remove from the job lowers your cost. On a 340-plus-mile move, that matters more than it does on a local job.

Once you've worked through this checklist and you're ready to lock in a date, the natural next step is connecting with professional long distance movers for the LA to San Jose route who know this corridor and can give you an accurate quote based on your actual volume.

Week 8 - 7

Weeks 8 and 7 Before the Move: Declutter, Measure, and Book Your Mover

Eight weeks out is when most people think it's too early to act. It isn't. The two tasks that pay off most - decluttering and booking your mover - both take longer than expected and directly affect your final bill.

Start with a room-by-room declutter pass. Go through every room and pull out anything you haven't used in 12 months. Furniture is the big one. A sectional sofa that barely fit your LA apartment may not work in a smaller San Jose floor plan - and shipping it 360 miles only to donate it on arrival wastes money. Measure your San Jose space first if possible.

For donation, LA has several options that pick up large items: Habitat for Humanity ReStores, the Salvation Army, and many local thrift organizations offer scheduled pickup for furniture. The 211 LA directory lists current pickup-eligible donation centers by neighborhood.

  • Furniture with structural damage: trash it, not donate it
  • Duplicate kitchen items, excess linens, old electronics: donate or sell
  • Clothing: donate anything you haven't worn in a full year
  • Books: many LA libraries accept donations; call ahead to confirm

Book your mover at week 8. If you're moving June through August, availability fills 4 to 6 weeks out. If you're moving in shoulder or off-season, 6 weeks still gives you the best selection of dates and crew sizes. Get at least two written estimates so you can compare how each one handles fuel and any specialty items.

Week 6

Week 6: Notify Utilities - SoCal Providers You're Canceling, NorCal Providers You're Starting

Utility transfers across the SoCal-to-NorCal divide involve completely different companies. None of them transfer automatically.

The providers you're likely canceling on the LA end and starting fresh on the San Jose end are different companies with separate account systems. Six weeks out gives you time to set move-out dates, avoid overlap billing, and catch any deposit requirements at the new address.

Electricity: In most of LA, your provider is LADWP or Southern California Edison. Cancel or schedule a final meter read for your move-out date. In San Jose, your electricity provider will be Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). Set up a new PG&E account before your move-in date - they offer online signup and can schedule service to start on your arrival day.

Gas: LA gas service is typically SoCalGas. San Jose gas service is also PG&E (PG&E handles both electricity and gas in Santa Clara County). Cancel SoCalGas on your move-out date and start PG&E gas simultaneously with your electricity account.

Water and trash: In LA, water billing varies by city and neighborhood. In San Jose, residential water service is provided by San Jose Water Company or Valley Water depending on your address. Check which applies to your San Jose zip code before moving. Trash service in San Jose is managed by the City of San Jose through its Environmental Services Department.

Internet: Spectrum and AT&T both operate in LA and San Jose, so if you're with either provider you may be able to transfer service rather than cancel and reopen. Call at the 6-week mark - transfer requests take 2 to 3 weeks to process and require a confirmed installation date at the San Jose address. Comcast/Xfinity also serves San Jose and is not available in most of LA, so if you want to switch providers this is when to start comparing plans.

Renter's or homeowner's insurance: Update your address with your insurer before move day. Your belongings are technically at a new address the moment you start moving in. Your mover's liability coverage does not replace your own policy.

Write down the confirmation number for every cancellation and new account activation. Utility billing disputes are easiest to resolve when you have the start and stop dates documented at the time they were set.

Week 5

Week 5: California DMV - Updating Your Registration After Moving to Santa Clara County

You do not need to re-register your vehicle from scratch. But you do need to update your address with the California DMV within 10 days of moving.

California vehicle registration stays with the owner across county lines. Moving from LA County to Santa Clara County does not trigger a new registration fee cycle - your renewal date stays the same. What changes is your address on the DMV record and, if your vehicle is subject to smog requirements, your county of registration for smog purposes.

Address change: The California DMV allows address updates online through their Change of Address portal. You'll need your driver's license number and vehicle plate number. The update applies to both your license and your vehicle registration in one transaction. Do this within 10 days of establishing your San Jose residence - California Vehicle Code Section 14600 requires it.

Smog check timing: Santa Clara County is a Basic smog check area, same as most of Los Angeles County. If your vehicle passed a smog check in LA within the past two years, you don't need a new one just because you moved counties. Your next smog check is due at your normal renewal cycle.

Parking permit implications: Several San Jose neighborhoods issue residential parking permits based on vehicle registration address. If your registration still shows an LA address when you apply for a permit, it may be rejected. Update the DMV address first, then apply for neighborhood permits - that order matters.

If you have a vehicle that hasn't been registered recently or has a lapsed smog check, address that before the move. A registration hold is easier to resolve while you still have access to your LA-area repair shops and testing stations.

Week 4

Week 4: San Jose Neighborhood Parking Permits - Willow Glen, Almaden, and Other Permit Zones

San Jose operates a Residential Permit Parking (RPP) program in specific neighborhoods. If your new address falls in one of these zones, you need a permit before you park on the street regularly.

Here's how to work through the permit process before move day:

Check your zone first
The City of San Jose's Department of Transportation maintains a map of active RPP zones. Willow Glen, Almaden Valley, and parts of Naglee Park have active permit requirements. Not every street in those neighborhoods is restricted - check your specific address.
Gather documents
You'll need proof of residence at the San Jose address (a lease or utility bill), your California driver's license with the updated address, and your current vehicle registration showing the San Jose address. This is why DMV address update comes first.
Apply through the city portal
San Jose's RPP permits are issued through the city's online portal or in person at City Hall. Processing typically takes 3 to 5 business days for online applications. Apply at week 4 so the permit is in hand before move day.
Moving day vehicle access
Your moving truck is not a personal vehicle and doesn't need an RPP permit. But if your street has narrow access or permit-only parking that limits where the truck can stage, notify your mover in advance. They may need to request a temporary no-parking zone from the city.
Visitor permits
Most San Jose RPP zones also issue a limited number of visitor day permits per year. Request these when you apply for your resident permit - they're useful for the first few weeks when family and friends are helping you settle in.

Temporary no-parking zones for moving trucks in San Jose are requested through the Department of Transportation at least 72 hours in advance. Your mover can often handle this request, but confirm it's part of their process - not all companies do this automatically.

Week 3

Week 3: Second Declutter Pass and Packing Strategy to Reduce Cubic Footage

Most people underestimate how much they still have after the first pass. Week 3 is when the second pass pays off most - and when your packing decisions start affecting your moving cost.

  1. 01

    The Cost-per-Cubic-Foot Reality

Long-distance moves are priced partly on weight and partly on truck space. A 26-foot truck holds roughly 1,400 to 1,600 cubic feet of loaded goods. Every large item you eliminate - an old dresser, a box spring you were going to replace anyway, a treadmill that hasn't moved in a year - reduces the truck space your job requires. On a 360-mile move, that reduction directly affects cost.

  2. 02

What to Prioritize Selling or Donating at Week 3

Focus on bulky, low-value items first: particle-board furniture (especially IKEA-style pieces that don't survive disassembly and reassembly well), extra mattresses and box springs, oversized outdoor furniture that won't fit a San Jose patio, and appliances you're replacing. These items have the highest ratio of space consumed to value moved.

  3. 03

Packing Efficiency: Box Selection and Density

Use uniform box sizes where possible - they stack efficiently in the truck. Small boxes for heavy items (books, tools), medium and large boxes for lighter items (linens, clothing). Avoid garbage bags for soft goods; they don't stack and they waste vertical space in the truck. Wardrobe boxes cost more but save packing time for hanging clothes and are worth it for a long-distance move where you want clothes arriving unwrinkled.

Weeks 2 and 1

Weeks 2 and 1: Address Changes, Final Utility Confirmations, and Move-Day Prep

The final two weeks are about completing the administrative tasks you set in motion and making sure move day itself runs without surprises.

Address changes to complete by week 2: USPS mail forwarding takes up to 10 business days to activate - submit it online at usps.com no later than week 2. Update your address with your bank, any subscription services, your employer's HR department, your health insurance provider, and the IRS (via Form 8822 if you've already filed for the current tax year).

Confirm utilities start and stop dates: Call or log in to verify that your SoCal utility cancellations are set for your move-out date and your PG&E accounts are active for your move-in date. Utility companies occasionally lose online requests - a confirmation call at week 2 catches that before you're standing in a dark apartment in San Jose.

Confirm mover details: Verify your move date, start time, pickup address, and delivery address with your moving company. Confirm access at both ends - elevator reservations if applicable, parking access for the truck, and any building-specific move-in rules at your San Jose property. Many San Jose apartment buildings and HOA communities have specific move-in windows (often 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays only) that you need to know in advance.

  • Reserve elevator time at your San Jose building if required
  • Confirm your mover has both the pickup and delivery addresses in writing
  • Pack an overnight bag with essentials - keep it with you, not in the truck
  • Defrost the fridge 24 hours before load day
  • Disconnect and drain washing machine hoses the evening before
  • Charge all devices and keep chargers accessible, not packed

Final walkthrough the morning of the move: Check every closet, cabinet, and drawer. Attic and garage access points are the most commonly missed areas. Once the truck leaves, retrieving forgotten items is expensive and sometimes not possible before your move-out deadline.
